Zambia power supplier, ZESCO Limited has announced a new 12-hour staggered load shedding schedule for Lusaka, effective May 27, 2024.
ZESCO says this approach aims to minimize the impact on customers as much as possible.
80% of Zambia’s energy comes from thermal power stations which were severely affected by El Niño induced drought.
Zimbabwe is equally affected as power production at Kariba is below full capacity due to limited water supply.
Last week, Energy Minister Peter Kapala said the government approved Zesco’s plan to raise the amount of load-shedding hours from eight to twelve, which went into effect on Monday, May 20, 2024. According to Kapala, the Kariba Dam power station produces just 166 Megawatts out of a total installed capacity of 1,080 Megawatts.
In a statement issued Friday, Kapala claimed that 12-hour load shedding would be done in stages.
