The Limpopo Department of Education is investigating an alleged case of food p0is0ning at Makahlule Primary School in Malamulele.
Matome Taueatsoala, the provincial spokesperson, said 22 students were transported to a nearby clinic in the afternoon on Wednesday when they began vomiting.
The children were eventually moved to Malamulele Hospital for treatment and discharge. “A second group of 13 students was rushed to the hospital, complaining of headaches and stomach cramps.”
“They were also released after being screened by health professionals,” Taueatsoala explained.
He stated that the provincial government will examine food samples consumed by students on Wednesday to see whether school nutrition rations were to blame.
“The department will also check the meals, especially snacks sold by vendors outside the school premises with the assistance of health inspectors.”
Meanwhile, Limpopo MEC for Education, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has appealed for calm while the investigations continue.
“We call on the parents and education community not to panic as the situation is under control and will be investigated thoroughly to ensure that learners are safe at all times,” said Lerule-Ramakhanya.
