In a concerted effort to ensure a pristine environment ahead of the SADC Heads of State and Government Summit in Harare, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has prosecuted 362 individuals for littering since the launch of its anti-litter campaign in July.
As part of the initiative aimed at promoting a clean and welcoming city, EMA’s Harare provincial manager Leo Mutungamiri highlighted the installation of waste bins at key intersections throughout the central business district (CBD) and along major thoroughfares leading to the New Parliament Building.
This proactive campaign involves collaboration with various stakeholders and volunteers, who are assisting in tidying up the city by dividing it into quadrants for efficient litter collection, ultimately directing waste to the Pomona dumpsite.
Mutungamiri emphasized the importance of enforcing strict littering laws, which impose fines ranging from US$30 to US$100 for violations, and underscored the commitment to maintaining cleanliness long after the summit concludes.
Additionally, the campaign advocates for recycling through effective waste separation at source, encouraging residents to utilize specially designated bins for different materials such as glass, plastics, and cans, while also promoting the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling in their daily habits to foster environmental stewardship.
