A visually-impaired man, Sekuru Innocent Mutubuki, is seeking payment from local musician Hubert Chitambara, popularly known as Huby Blakes, for renting his flat in Harare’s Avenues area. The dispute has been ongoing for four years, with Chitambara allegedly refusing to settle the arrears.
Mutubuki claims Chitambara rented his flat for three years but has not paid the full amount, leaving a balance of US$1,215. Chitambara, however, disputes this, saying he left the keys with the caretaker and believes Mutubuki’s agent duped him.
Mutubuki alleges that Chitambara became evasive and even told him to “go to hell” when asked to pay the rent. Chitambara has since blocked Mutubuki’s contact number and is allegedly avoiding service of summons.
Mutubuki has approached the courts, but Chitambara’s whereabouts are unknown. Chitambara claims he left for South Africa and has been spotted on buses in Harare’s Samora Machel area.
In response, Chitambara denies owing Mutubuki the claimed amount, saying he left the flat after giving three months’ notice and handed over the keys to the caretaker. He suggests Mutubuki should take up the matter with his agent.
The dispute remains unresolved, with both parties holding different versions of events. Will Mutubuki manage to recover the alleged debt, or will Chitambara continue to evade payment? The outcome remains uncertain.
