Multiple award winner and renowned Zimbabwean investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono hailed Ukraine for assisting most of the African countries with food.
Ukraine is one of the European countries which export food to most of the African countries before Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Chin’ono was wondering why a small country (Ukraine) is able to fed the second biggest continent and suggest the answers.
On his X handle account Chin’ono wrote the following:
Dear Africans,
Do you know that the African continent imports 85% of its food from outside Africa?
Did you know that almost every African country imported food from Ukraine in 2021?
Do you know that almost 10 African leaders flew to Ukraine to beg for an end of its war with Russia because they said Africans would starve?
Do you know that Netherlands which is the size of KwaZulu Natal is the second biggest food producer in the world, yet Africa with all its resources and fertile soils imports its food from a country at war?
Who shall we blame for this embarrassing fact, shall we blame colonialism?🤣🤣
How do we do that when today’s basket cases like Zimbabwe were food baskets at independence?
Today the president of Zimbabwe had a huge ceremony celebrating a donation of 25,000 tonnes of maize and wheat from a country at war yet his party took almost all productive land from white farmers, land that is mostly lying idle!
How do we shake off this embarrassment my dear African brothers and sisters?
How can the whole continent of Africa which is the second biggest continent after Asia be fed by a country called Ukraine which is half the size of South Africa?
Africa is the second largest continent on Earth, covering an area of about 30.2 million square kilometers (11.7 million square miles).
Ukraine is 603,500 square kilometers (about 233,000 square miles).
This means that Africa is roughly 50 times larger than Ukraine.
How do we live with this embarrassment as Africans, and more importantly, why do we allow it to continue?
