In a distressing incident that occurred this week in Figtree, Matabeleland South province, four armed robbers are currently at large after allegedly kidnapping a man, robbing him of US$100, and leaving him bound in a bushy area. The Bulawayo police spokesperson confirmed the incident, urging the public to avoid boarding unauthorized vehicles, known as mushikashika or pirate Honda Fits, as they are frequently used by criminals.
According to reports, the 49-year-old victim boarded a Honda Fit at the corner of Plumtree Road and 15th Avenue, intending to be dropped off near Alpha Steel in the Donnington West industrial area. However, upon reaching a bus stop close to his workplace, he requested to disembark. Shockingly, instead of complying, the driver accelerated the vehicle, heading towards Figtree.
Upon reaching Figtree, a few meters away from a tollgate, the perpetrators brandished a machete and a knife, threatening the victim. They forcibly took his US$100 and a satchel. Subsequently, they tied him up with a wire and dragged him into a nearby bushy area, before making their escape towards Plumtree.
After several hours, the victim heard people passing by, and he managed to call out for help. Thankfully, they came to his aid, untied him, and he promptly reported the incident to the police.
This incident serves as a reminder to the public to exercise caution and avoid getting into unregistered vehicles for transportation. The police advise planning journeys in advance and utilizing authorized public transport options such as Zupco or taxis.
