Mzansi is still in celebration mode following the Springboks’ thrilling win over England in the Rugby World Cup semi-final at the Stade de France in Paris. It was a tense and tight match that was sealed by a late penalty kick from Handre Pollard. England led most of the game, props to four penalties and a drop goal from captain Owen Farrell.
South Africa scored their only try in the 69th minute through lock RG Snyman, who powered over from close range. Pollard, who came off the bench in the first half, kicked three penalties and converted Snyman’s try. Pollard’s final penalty, from 49 metres out, gave South Africa a 16-15 lead with two minutes left on the clock.
England tried to launch a last-ditch offensive, but South Africa’s defence held firm and secured their place in the final against New Zealand.
As the rugby fever swept South Africa, the Zimbabwean neighbours also expressed joy over the Springboks’ victory. Typical of all Africans, Zimbabweans were rallying behind the Springboks as the only African country still at the Rugby World Cup.
However, some South Africans took offence at this and lashed out at Zimbabweans for celebrating the Springboks. One user tweeted:
“Zimbabweans are truly obsessed with being South African, now they’re celebrating #Springboks win as if it’s their national team! 😭😭 Iyooh this level of international orphans is just deep…🤣🤣😂😂 #StrongerTogether as South Africans, not with Zimbabweans! Haai maan suka 😏🚮 #rugbyworldcup2023”
South Africans and Zimbabweans got into a brawl over the Springboks.
Hatiperi:
“The best football player in South Africa is Khama Billiat. The best rugby player in South Africa is Beast. So, should we let all this slide? Have shame, my friend.”
Violet:
“I don’t understand such mentality. Even in soccer, many support Liverpool, Man United, Arsenal etc. So, what’s strange in some supporting the South African rugby team🤷🏽♀️ And have you forgotten the Zimbabweans who played for the Boks??”
Klaus:
“Speaking like you got paid for their win.”
Goodman:
“Those guys in the team are sons of Zimbabwean white farmers who left Zimbabwe anyway. So the celebration is for everyone.”
Crossroads:
“Opportunists these ones, the next they’ll be saying they helped SA win the rugby world cup…”
