The Police is finalising the extradition processes of fugitive murder suspect Peter Dube from Mozambique who is wanted in connection with the killing of two people in Gweru in 2021.
The finalisation of the extradition of murder suspect Peter Dube was revealed by Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga on the sidelines of an event to mark the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) centenary celebrations held in Harare this Saturday.
“Today we are celebrating the charter of Interpol and our cooperation with INTERPOL is paying dividends with more criminals who have crossed the border being brought back. For example, we have managed to trace and bring back home former Police who killed people here before fleeing to Mozambique. We also managed to track Peter Dube who is wanted in connection with killing people here in Gweru. In two days we expect him back in Zimbabwe, ” he said.
Dube skipped the country’s boarder after a shooting spree in 2021 in which he reportedly killed two people in Gweru after suspecting that his second wife was cheating on him.
After the incident, Dube escaped to South Africa before he sought asylum in Ireland where he was later apprehended before being deported to Mozambique after he lied that he was a Mozambican national.
The INTERPOL celebration day also coincides with the Police Fun Fare Day whose emphasis this year is on unity of purpose in the fight against drug and substance abuse.
He added, “The idea behind the Funfair is to reinforce the relationship between the Police force and the communities. As you know there is not much we can do without the help of the public. The public is playing a key role in informing our members. Coming to the issue of drug and substance abuse the issue is now a global pandemic. So, what we have done is try to involve everyone in the fight. ”
The government established an inter-ministerial committee last year to deal with the scourge of drug and substance abuse.
