YOUTH in Bulawayo have come out and raised concerns on the recalls and the never ending election cycle, citing that the country should focus on more pressing issues which the country is facing. The out-cry comes after a Bulawayo-based CCC supporter who claims to be the party’s interim secretary-general, Sengezo Tshabangu, recalled 15 CCC Members of Parliament (MPs) and 17 councillors alleging that they had ceased to be members of the opposition party.
This development has left youth in Bulawayo saying that the recalls are nothing but holding the nation back. Michael Chirwa from Cowdrey park said: “this never ending election cycle is costing us as a nation, we have problems as a national that need to be addressed and having more elections is a step in the wrong direction”
President Emmerson Mnangagwa proclaimed December 9 as the date for by-elections in the 15 constituencies which fell vacant following the recent recall of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislators by self-proclaimed party secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu.
Mason Khoza said the recalls were unnecessary, citing that those who were elected during the august polls were supposed to remain and work on improving the country.
“This is so disheartening; we cannot keep doing the same thing like this, dragging us backward because of individuals who want to abuse their power. We really need to move on and be done with this unnecessary election cycle,” he said.
Another resident alleged that the recalls are a ploy by the dominating party to increase its number of seats in parliament.
“But in reality I think it’s a ploy by zanu pf to gain that majority edge in parliament, I also doubt the authenticity and we also have to question the whole authority of Sengezo Tshabangu to recall MPs and councilmen.
“You will also realise that more millions will be spent on these upcoming by-elections that would have been avoided and the money channelled towards more purposeful projects, projects that we can benefit from as the youth,” he added.
