A man who allegedly disappeared after being given US$21 500 to import a Ford Ranger vehicle on behalf of his friend was arraigned before the courts today.
Stanley Maworera (45) appeared before Harare Magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi charged with fraud.
He was released on US$300 bail and will return to court on January 25, 2024.
Prosecuting, Mr Zebediah Bofu alleged that sometime in April, the complainant, Leonard Mazhara who is friends with Maworera met him at Joina City building in Harare’s central business district.
Mazhara told Maworera that he intended to purchase a Ford Ranger twin cab motor vehicle from South Africa.
Maworera then misrepresented to him that he could import the motor vehicle for him at a price of US$21 500.
Mazhara gave Maworera US$21 500 and was promised to receive the car within two weeks.
After receiving the money, Maworera went to South Africa.
After the lapse of the promised two-week period, Mazhara made a follow up for the motor vehicle but Maworera became evasive and blocked his mobile number.
This prompted him to report the matter to police leading to his arrest.
Mazhara did not recover anything.
