In a devastating incident that unfolded on the Mutare-Masvingo Highway near Gudyanga Primary School, a five-year-old girl named Marvellous Mhlanga tragically lost her life after being struck by a rear wheel that detached from a haulage truck’s trailer. The incident occurred last Friday morning in the Gudyanga area under Chief Muusha in Chimanimani.
According to Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, the Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, the driver of the truck, Itai Mupondi (32) from Mucheke, Masvingo, was towing a white trailer with his white Volvo FH truck at the time of the incident. The truck had no passengers on board when the right rear wheel of the trailer suddenly detached from the axle and began rolling uncontrollably.
Regrettably, Marvellous was walking on the far left side of the road when the detached wheel struck her on the head, causing immediate fatality. Despite the prompt response from Chipinge traffic police, who were alerted to the scene, the young girl’s life could not be saved.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Marvellous’ body was taken to Birchenough Bridge Hospital for a post-mortem examination, while her grieving next of kin were notified of the heartbreaking incident.
This heartbreaking accident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for regular maintenance and inspections of vehicles to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring.
The local community mourns the loss of Marvellous, and this incident serves as a somber call for increased vigilance and safety measures on the roads to protect precious lives.
