Nedbank Robbery in Bulawayo: Thieves Flee with US$271K, R2.2M in Daring Raid, Ignore Worthless Bond Notes
Over the weekend, thieves targeted the Nedbank Belmont Branch in Bulawayo. They managed to break in and steal more than US$271,000 along with R2.2 million. It’s believed that the culprits had some inside help, potentially from the bank staff or security guards.
The police provided details on the incident. The thieves forcibly opened several safes to access the money. A thorough investigation is now underway, and the police are actively searching for the suspects involved.
Nedbank Robbery in Bulawayo: Thieves Outsmart Security Measures
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, confirmed the robbery. He stated that Nedbank employees discovered the breach when they arrived for work the day after the incident.
Asst Comm Nyathi explained,
“We are investigating a case of unlawful entry and theft which was reported at Nedbank Belmont branch on August 28, 2023, by the bank staff when they reported for duty. The staff discovered that the back door of the bank had been vandalised and was wide open while the razor wire that is mounted on the precast wall to the premises had been cut. The screen door that leads to the bank had been tampered with and some windows had been forced open with some burglar bars cut. The alarm systems and control systems had also been tampered with while the bank vaults had also been forced open.”

Regarding the stolen funds, Asst Comm Nyathi clarified that the thieves targeted three safes. These safes contained US dollars, Zimbabwean dollars, and South African rand. The criminals took the US dollars and South African rand but left the Zimbabwean dollars untouched. The total amount stolen was US$271,500 and R2,242,000.
“One of the safes contained US dollars, the other Zimbabwean dollars while the other one had South African rands. The unknown suspects took the US dollars and South African rands and left the Zimbabwean Dollars. US$271 500 and R2 242 000 was stolen,” he said.
Asst Comm Nyathi noted that the possibility of an inside job is being considered, whether involving bank staff or security personnel. During the time of the incident, there was a security guard present on the premises.
