In an unexpected turn of events, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that he will be stepping down as Liverpool Football Club manager at the end of the current season.
Naturally, the news caught Liverpool and football fans off-guard as the German was contracted to the Reds until 2026.
Speaking on Liverpool TV last Friday, Klopp shared his heartfelt decision, expressing his deep affection for the city, the club, and its staff.
“I will leave the club at the end of the season. I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people when they hear it for the first time. I love absolutely everything about this club and this city, our supporters, the team, the staff,” a visibly emotional Klopp said.
While the decision left many football fans scratching their heads, the Liverpool manager explained that this felt like the next logical decision for him career-wise.
Jurgen Klopp said he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the current campaign because he is running out of energy.
“I’m running out of energy. I cannot do this again and again. After all the years we had together, the respect grew for you. The least I owe you is the truth,” Klopp explained why he is leaving the club at the end of the season.
At the time of writing, it is unclear if Klopp will take up a coaching job elsewhere. His assistant managers Pepijn Lijnder and Peter Krawietz and development coach Vitor Matos will also leave Liverpool at the end of the season. It is understood that Lijnders is keen on pursuing a career as a football manager.
Speculation runs rampant regarding Klopp’s successor at Liverpool, with fans tipping Xabi Alonso as a potential candidate. Alonso presently serves as the head coach of Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.
