THE Harare City Council continues to hog the limelight for the wrong reasons with the latest being motorists who have red flagged the City Council’s ineptitude in the maintenance of roads.
A survey conducted around Harare in suburbs such as Mbare, Waterfalls and Dzivarasekwa revealed a story state of affairs with motorists calling on the city council to own up and address the situation.
“The situation here is not good, look at our roads they are in a sorry state, so we are calling for the city council to rehabilitate the roads,” said a motorist.
Another added, “The issue of suspension is our problem. Every month we repair cars, but the city council continues to fold hands.”
“I don’t think that we still have council here in Harare because if we have, they were going to attend to this problem. The situation is dire,” said another motorist.
There are also growing calls for the government to appoint a Commission to run the affairs of the capital where residents are in distress due to poor service delivery.
“The Harare City Council has failed for years to provide Services to residents for years so what I think is that there should be w Commission to run the affairs of this city,” said the National Chairperson of ZNOART, Mr Shalva Chikomba.
The local authority however says road rehabilitation and delivery of other services is a work in progress.
“We have scheduled a meeting with the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works and ZINARA so that so that we come up with a plan and model on how best we can repair our roads in Harare,” said the Harare City Council Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume.
To address the challenge, the Second Republic declared the country’s road network a state of disaster in 2021 and has since embarked on a national road reconstruction blitz that has seen many of the country’s roads being upgraded and rehabilitated.
