KWEKWE – Kwekwe city fathers have accused their employees of stealing diesel and using service delivery vehicles for personal errands.
The councillors fumed in a full council meeting last Thursday and ordered management to put measures to ensure that council resources are not abused.
Amaveni Councillor Makomborero Mlambo told the meeting that rehabilitation of roads in his area has stalled as council employees are stealing diesel allocated for the project.
“I am really worried by our employees behaviour. We have dumps of gravel in Amaveni that have not been used to rehabilitate the roads. Employees are stealing diesel and gravel using council vehicles. I have proof of what I am saying and I can provide the evidence that diesel is being stolen.
“As management you need to introduce aggressive security measures to protect council property. Employees are stealing and this has resulted in unnecessary delays in road rehabilitation especially in Amaveni,” he said.
Councillor Alex Senge urged management to install vehicle trackers to stop the abuse of council vehicles.
“These guys are stealing from council and you should introduce locking system on our fleet of vehicles. They are stealing vehicles from refuse trucks and the trucks are failing to reach other residential suburbs resulting in illegal dumpsites in our suburbs,” he said.
Works Department Director Engineer John Mhike said management will rectify the matter.
“I have taken note of the concerns and I will work on them but let me hasten to say if you see any council employee behaving somehow you should let us know so that we work around the problem,” he said.
