In a tragic incident that occurred in 2021, Clayton Mabasa Hunda has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the m-rder of his wife. The dispute arose after a power outage ended, and Hunda requested his wife to prepare sadza (a traditional Zimbabwean dish) for him. However, she refused, claiming she was talking to her boyfriends.
Under the influence of alcohol, having consumed a 750ml bottle of gin, Hunda became enraged and @ss@ulted his wife. He proceeded to sit on her chest and forcefully pulled out her braids. The @ss@ult resulted in her losing consciousness and ultimately led to her d3ath.
During the trial, Hunda defended himself, citing a moment of madness and claiming provocation due to his intoxicated state. However, High Court judge Justice Lucy Mungwari, in convicting Hunda, determined that although there was some provocation, it did not meet the threshold required for a partial defense of provocation.
Justice Mungwari acknowledged that Hunda’s actions were out of character and decided on a rehabilitative sentence. She stated that Hunda’s offense was driven by passion and the belief that his wife was being unfaithful. Consequently, Hunda was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment
Following the discovery of his wife’s d3ath, Hunda attempted to administer first aid by pouring water on her, but his efforts were unsuccessful.
This tragic incident highlights the severe consequences of domestic violence and serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
