Zimbabweans are expressing outrage over a disturbing incident in which Harare Municipal Police officers dragged a female vendor on the road.
The Harare City Council and the Zimbabwe Republic Police have been conducting an operation to clean the city. They have been ridding the Harare central business district of illegal vendors, kombis and pirate taxis (mushikashika).
Council and ZRP are always helping clear the streets, but they have gone a notch up over the past few weeks. Sometimes, authorities storm the pavements in town and confiscate vendors’ fruits, vegetables and wares. Some illegal vendors are too slow and get spirited off to the Harare Central Police Station.
During one of their raids earlier today, a group of male Harare Municipal Police officers ambushed vendors. In the short melee that ensued, they managed to capture one woman.
The officers arrested her and told her they were taking her to the station. The female vendor stubbornly refused, and the officers would have none of it. They held her by the hands, her side bag dangling, and dragged her on the hard surface.
The vendor could not help but shriek indignantly at the rough treatment she got from the municipal officers. The dramatic incident attracted a crowd, and people started recording the incident. Some were complaining over the abuse the woman was being subjected to by the officers, but they dug in and kept pulling the hapless vendor.
Social media users expressed reservations over the treatment of the vendor, bordering on abuse.
