After dismissal from Rhodesia police in 1913 for Pentecostal seizures and speaking in tongues during police duty. Under the guidance of the Holy spirit Samuel Mutendi went to receive water baptism in South Africa from the Zion Apostolic Faith Mission (ZAFM) in Pretoria. He was baptized by Reverand Mahlangu in which members spoke in tongues.
Samuel Mutendi returned to Rhodesia/Zimbabwe as a ZAFM missionary and commissioned Reverand and began to preach the word of God, baptising people and performing many faith miracles, fighting sickness and poverty using his Holy Staff (mapumangozi) and holy water (machipisa uroyi) to cast out evil spirits in 1923.
Many were converted as he established his reputation as a faith healer, rain maker, wise counsellor and bold man of God.
He and his converts endured persecution from local chiefs as well as white missionaries who believe only they can preach and baptise people not an African Missionary.
