Maureen Kademaunga, a Sunningdale legislator, had her trial commence in Harare yesterday, facing attempted murd3r charges.
Kademaunga appeared alongside Clayd Mashozhera, a Councilor from Harare City Council’s Ward 10, as well as Noel Munhuwei and Daudi Jessub.
The four collectively pleaded not guilty to charges, which included attempted murd3r and malicious damage to property.
According to court records, the incident took place on August 22 2023. The complainants, identified as Cyril Nyauchi, Artwell Marwa, and Spencer Mudarikwa, were engaged in distributing food to ZANU PF election agents at various polling stations within Sunningdale. They were travelling in a Toyota Spacio.
Upon reaching the Metro Peach Main Entrance, situated at the intersection of Seke Road and Boshoff Road in Sunningdale 1, Harare, the quartet and ten other individuals obstructed their passage. The group arrived in a convoy consisting of a white Toyota Noah, a pearl Toyota Mark X, a white commuter omnibus, a Honda Fit, and two additional vehicles, the registration numbers of which were not documented.
While Jessub and others disembarked from their vehicles, Kademaunga, Mashozhera, and Munhuwei remained inside their cars. Allegedly, the @ssailants proceeded to shatter the windows of the complainants’ vehicle.
Nyauchi suffered severe injuri3s after being ass@ulted by the mob, employing various weapons, including an axe, golf sticks, whips, and button sticks, rendering him unconscious. Marwa and Mudarikwa also sustained significant injuri3s during the altercation.
Subsequently, the ass@ilants purportedly set the Toyota Spacio ablaze before making their escape. The trio received aid from Good Samaritans, who transported them to the hospital for medical attention.
Maureen was arrested and is now facing trial for the charges together with the alleged other perpetrators in the case. More details on the case will be shared as the trial goes on.
