A clearing agent recently appeared in court for allegedly defrauding a Chinese national of US$5 500 that he had given him for customs duty.
Noel Chinyuku appeared before Harare magistrate, Mr Dennis Mangosi, charged with theft.
He was granted US$150 bail and will return in court on May 14.
Prosecutor Mr Rufaro Chonzi alleged that sometime in March in Harare’s Central Business District, Wang Nawang wanted to pay customs duty for her electrical consignment, which she imported from China.
She engaged Chinyuku, a clearing agent, and they agreed that she would give him US$5500 and $78 million for the task.
Chinyuku got the money but converted it to personal use.
As a result, he failed to clear the consignment when it arrived from China.
Wang had to pay the duty when Chinyuku became evasive.
Total value lost is US$5500 and $78 million and nothing was recovered.
