KwaZulu Natal Dstv’s Premiership outfit Richards Bay FC boss spent a few hours behind bars on Friday together with his bodyguards after they were arrested and charged with being in possession of a stolen car. The club’s chairman Jomo Biyela nearly missed the game of his team against Orlando Pirates after he was arrested with his bodyguards on Friday.
Biyela was arrested shortly after attending the ANC event that was held in Esikhaleni township previously known as Esikhawini in the north Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. According to a police source, Biyela whose team is currently fighting relegation in the Premier league was taken in for questioning with his bodyguards after they were allegedly caught travelling in a stolen car with no number plates.
The four men were later charged with being in possession of a stolen car. ZiMoja understands that Biyela who was held at the Esikhaleni (Esikhawini) police station was later released on bail together with his bodyguards after the intervention of his lawyers.
According to Biyela, the car, an SUV, belongs to the security company he hired. “I cannot be held accountable for that car. Yes, we were taken to Esikhaleni Police station, and we were later released. I spent a night at home and now I am about to leave to attend the game between my team and Orlando Pirates. I don’t need such stories.
We will be appearing in court on Monday as per procedure, but this has nothing to do with me,” he said. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed Biyela’s arrest. “The police in Esikhaleni have arrested four suspects for being in possession of suspected stolen vehicle on Friday afternoon.
Police were patrolling along the Mthombothi Road when they spotted a suspicious white Toyota Fortune without registration plates, and they immediately stopped it. Preliminary investigation proved that the vehicle was reported stolen in Durban North in March 2023. All four suspects were arrested and will appear in the local court on Monday, 13 May 2024,” Netshiunda said.
