A coal miner has been fined US$5,000 for operating without the requisite Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificate in Matebeleland North province.
The firm, BEETEE Mining Syndicate, was fined US$500 on Tuesday for improperly storing inflammable substances.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Nick Mangwana confirmed the development in a post on his X handle.
“BEETEE Mining Syndicate, a mining company extracting coal at Kalungwizi coal mine, was fined US$5,000 by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) for mining without an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Certificate.
“An additional US$500 fine was issued for storing fuel in plastic containers. EMA has ordered BEETEE Mining Syndicate to cease mining operations and focus on obtaining the EIA certificate first,” said Mangwana.
The top government official added that President Emmerson Mnangagwa consistently emphasizes the need for order in the mining sector.”
