The families of those who perished in the building collapse in George, Western Cape, will hold a memorial service for their loved ones today.
Thirty-four people di3d when the multi-story residential building under construction collapsed approximately two weeks ago. Nine individuals remain under medical treatment.
Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, handed over the construction site to the Department of Labour and the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation on Friday.
More than 1,000 rescue workers, support personnel, and volunteers assisted in the rescue operations and the removal of 6,000 tons of rubble.
Bredell remarked that this disaster will be remembered not only for the tragic loss of life but also for the incredibly brave and selfless efforts of over 1,000 individuals since Monday, May 6, when the incident occurred.
The memorial service will be held at Lawaaikamp Community Hall.
