Nelson Chamisa, a Zimbabwean politician and the former President of the Citizens Coalition for Change, has consistently advocated for change in Zimbabwe, encouraging citizens to maintain faith despite his loss in the presidential elections.
In a recent post, Chamisa emphasised the importance of perception, stating that “Image is everything.”
He recounted an encounter where a Zimbabwean citizen, who is also a businessman, shared a troubling observation from their trip to Ivory Coast.
According to Chamisa’s post, the businessman encountered a fishing slum community named “Zimbabwe” during their travels.
He described the community as dirty, disorganised, and chaotic.
The tour guide, unaware of the Zimbabwean visitor, explained to the businessman that the community was named Zimbabwe because it symbolises chaos and disorder.
Shockingly, the tour guide revealed that this slum was named “Zimbabwe.” The touring citizen inquired the origins and significance of the name.
Unbeknown to the tour guide that a Zimbabwean was part of the touring party, the tour guide explained that the name Zimbabwe symbolized the disorder, chaos and filth that pervades the area.
This revelation reflects the painful perception of our beloved country by others elsewhere, even from the African continent.
This is despite Zimbabwe being home to the largest lithium deposits in Africa and many other sought-after mineral resources.
Such a harsh reality goes to show how broken politics and rigged, disputed and illegal elections have cast a long shadow on our beautiful nation.
The Zimbabwean story will change. We will reclaim and transform the Zimbabwean story into one of pride, transformation, opportunities and prosperity. #ChangeNow #OnePeople
