KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi successfully persuaded protesting taxi owners to clear blocked roads in Westville on Friday following brief negotiations.
Disgruntled taxi owners had instructed their drivers to block Umgeni and Argyle roads as well as the N3 near the Pavilion mall in Westville, Durban.
Upon arrival at the scene, Mkhwanazi engaged with the taxi owners, urging them to unblock the roads and assuring them of a scheduled meeting with the provincial transport department. The taxi owners voiced their grievances about what they perceived as excessive penalties imposed by metro police.
Mkhwanazi addressed the situation, highlighting the repercussions of road blockages and expressing disappointment in the obstruction of police duties by some taxi drivers. He emphasized the importance of abiding by the law and maintaining cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
