Zimbabwe and the United Nations (UN) have signed a joint appeal worth US$400 million to mobilize resources in response to the El Nino-induced drought, which has left many without food.
Local Government and Public Works Minister, Honourable Daniel Garwe, signed the appeal with the United Nations for food aid amounting to US$420 million in Harare this Monday.
“The humanitarian assistance focuses on immediate needs, recovery, and resilience building of the affected populace. We are thankful to the development and humanitarian partners for their generous support to date. Overall estimated requirements for intervention by all sectors of the economy are staggered at US$3.3 billion,” said Honourable Garwe.
“To respond to this situation, this flash appeal requires US$423.9 million for humanitarian partners to assist close to 3.1 million people. This appeal aims to mobilise humanitarian action to complement the government’s own relief efforts,” said the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Edward Kallon.
