Four men who were previously employed by former first lady Grace Mugabe have appeared in court, @ccused of ste@ling household property and cutlery valued at an estimated US$500,000 from ex-President Robert Mugabe’s Blue Roof home in Borrowdale, Harare.
The @ccused individuals are identified as Allen Chinamonya, 42; Danmore Chinamonya, 35; Samson Karonga; and Brighton Bunganirwa, 46.
They appeared before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa and are scheduled to apply for bail this Tuesday.
State prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti detailed that Allen had worked as a groundsman before becoming a driver from 2004 to 2022. Danmore similarly transitioned from a groundsman to a driver over the same period. Karonga was employed as an electrician at the Blue Roof, while Bunganirwa worked as a gardener.
Mutsokoti explained that in 2018, Grace brought 11 containers filled with various household items from State House after the former President’s ouster in 2017. She secured these items by locking the container doors.
Despite these security measures, the prosecutor alleged that from 2018 to May 2024, the four defendants conspired to break the padlocks securing the containers. They allegedly st0le various household items including television sets, clothes, cutlery, and bath towels.
The th3ft was discovered by Grace on May 22, 2024, during her visit to the containers to select artifacts once owned by her l@te husband for donation to the African Liberation Museum. The incident was reported to Borrowdale police on May 25.
