“This is a great day for democracy in South Africa” says Ramaphosa

“I am fit as a fiddle”, Cyril Ramaphosa refutes claims that he collapsed and was hospitalised

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized that today marks a pivotal moment for the country as citizens decide on its future. He expressed confidence that the people will once again place their trust in the African National Congress (ANC) and grant it the mandate to continue leading the nation.

As voting commenced today, Ramaphosa expressed optimism about the ANC’s prospects. He noted that the voting process is progressing smoothly. Accompanied by his wife, he cast his own vote in the city of his upbringing, expressing his desire for the ANC to persist in guiding South Africa forward.

“This is a great day for democracy in South Africa. Today we vote for the stability and the extension of our democracy. Today South Africa decides on the future of our country and I have no doubt that once again the people will invest their confidence and give the mandate to the African National Congress to continue to lead our country,” he said.

Ramaphosa, a co-founder of the country’s largest mining union who later became a prominent businessman, assumed the presidency in 2018. Despite facing a misconduct controversy, he was re-elected as the ANC’s leader in 2022.

Ramaphosa played a pivotal role as the ANC’s chief negotiator during the talks that led to the peaceful transition from apartheid. This transition paved the way for Nelson Mandela to become South Africa’s first Black president following the historic all-race vote in 1994. Ramaphosa also contributed significantly to the drafting of South Africa’s progressive constitution.
