Matebeleland North Province Senator Sengezo Tshabangu’s appointment as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament has sparked controversy and debate in Zimbabwe.
Yesterday, Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda announced the appointment of Sengezo Tshabangu as the Leader of the Opposition in Zimbabwe’s Parliament, overseeing both the National Assembly and the Senate.
Critics, including opposition figures and social media users, accuse the ruling ZANU PF party of orchestrating a power grab by installing Tshabangu to control the political landscape.
This move has been criticised by some, including David Coltart, as undermining the representative nature of Parliament.
The opposition, particularly the CCC party, faces internal divisions and questions about the legitimacy of Tshabangu’s appointment.
The situation has divided public opinion and political figures, with some urging MPs not to resign and others calling for a rejection of the current political setup in the next election.
