The city of Harare has launched a new waste management program aimed at improving the city’s cleanliness and restoring its “Sunshine City” status. The program, which is a partnership between the city, the government, and Belarus, will involve the deployment of 52 new tractors equipped with various attachments to facilitate multi-purpose operations.
The tractors will be used to collect waste, clear drains, and maintain public spaces, and are equipped with front-end loaders, backhoes, lawn mowers, and trailers. The city’s mayor, Jacob Mafume, stated that waste management is the city’s biggest challenge, and that the program is designed to address this issue by providing every district and ward with a compactor and a tractor.
The program is designed to be multi-purpose, allowing the tractors to be used for various tasks such as collecting waste, providing water where there is no water, and transporting materials. The city has acquired 72 brand new tractors of varying sizes, which can pull a trailer train. The mayor emphasized the importance of community involvement in the program, stating that residents will be responsible for monitoring the use of the equipment and ensuring that it is used for the benefit of their particular ward.
The mayor also expressed gratitude to the government for its support in the initiative, noting that the partnership is a key aspect of the program’s success.
