100,000 Street Vendors Registered by City Council

Harare City Council’s ban on vending triggers conflict

Harare City Council has registered over 100,000 street vendors in a move that will see them relocating to designated vending sites.

The registration exercise, which was launched in a bid to formalise the informal sector, has been hailed as a major success by the authorities.

The decision to register the street vendors comes as part of a broader effort to declutter the city’s streets and sidewalks, which have been plagued by illegal vending activities.

The council has long struggled to deal with the issue of street vendors, who have been accused of blocking sidewalks and creating unsanitary conditions.

The registration process, which was conducted in partnership with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Local Government and the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce, has seen thousands of street vendors coming forward to register their businesses.

The vendors have been required to provide identification documents, proof of residency, and other relevant information as part of the registration process.

The move is expected to have several benefits for the city and its residents. Firstly, it will help to reduce the number of vendors on the streets, which will in turn improve the overall aesthetic appeal of the city.

Secondly, it will provide a safe and organised environment for vendors to operate, which will help to reduce conflicts and improve relationships between vendors and local residents.

Moreover, the registration process is expected to generate revenue for the city council, which can be used to improve infrastructure and services.

The council has also announced plans to provide training and support to registered vendors, which will help them to improve their skills and increase their productivity.

The Council has also announced plans to establish a vending management system, which will be used to monitor and regulate vending activities in the city.

The system will include measures such as designated vending sites, vending permits, and enforcement mechanisms to ensure that vendors comply with the regulations.
