Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart has called for transparency in the city’s housing waiting list, citing concerns that some residents have been waiting for over 20 years to receive houses or stands.
The mayor’s remarks come at a time when the city is facing a severe housing crisis, with many residents struggling to find affordable accommodation.
According to Coltart, the city’s housing waiting list is a long and complicated one, with many residents having been waiting for decades to receive a house or stand.
He expressed concern that the lack of transparency in the system has led to frustration and disillusionment among residents, who are tired of waiting for what they consider to be their rightful housing.
“We need to be transparent about the housing waiting list,” Coltart said.
“It’s unacceptable that some residents have been waiting for over 20 years to receive a house or stand. We need to know how many people are on the list, where they are on the list, and when they can expect to receive their housing. We need to be accountable and transparent in our dealings with the public.”
“We are tired of being treated like this,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We have been waiting for years for a house or stand, and it’s not fair that we are being left behind. We need the city council to take action and provide us with the housing we need.”
In response to the criticism, Coltart has promised to take action to address the city’s housing crisis. He has pledged to work with other stakeholders, including government officials and private developers, to identify solutions to the problem.
“We will work with all stakeholders to find solutions to the housing crisis,” Coltart said. “We will prioritize the needs of ordinary residents and ensure that they are given fair access to affordable housing. We will also work to address the root causes of the crisis, including corruption and mismanagement.”
