A Harare woman, employed as a housemaid by a Chinese national, allegedly conspired with two police officers to steal US$107,000 from her employer before attempting to flee to South Africa to avoid arrest.
Marvelous Mapfumo appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi, who remanded her in custody pending a bail hearing.
Her suspected accomplices, police detectives Hebert Kurebgwaseka and Paul Kondo, are currently evading law enforcement.
Prosecutor Thomas Chanakira alleged that the trio stole the money, which was kept by the complainant, Sis Lin, at her Highlands home in Harare on May 30 of this year.

On June 12, 2024, detectives from Bulawayo received information from a reliable source indicating that Mapfumo was en route to South Africa via Botswana aboard a haulage truck.
Acting on this tip, they located and arrested her.
“On June 13, the accused was escorted to CID Highlands, Harare. Following a brief interview, the accused revealed that she committed the crime with Kurebgwaseka and Kondo, who are police detectives stationed at the Central Criminal Bureau, Harare,” said Chanakira.
According to Chanakira, after stealing the money, the trio checked into Ekhaya Lodge in Waterfalls, where they counted and divided the money. Kurebgwaseka and Kondo took US$30,000 each, while Mapfumo took US$47,000.
Kurebgwaseka subsequently took Mapfumo’s portion of US$47,000, claiming it was for safekeeping due to potential surveillance by detectives. Kondo then took Mapfumo to his girlfriend Tracey Madzima’s residence in Sunningdale to isolate her and prevent her from disclosing information.
Subsequently, Kondo organised Mapfumo’s trip to South Africa to evade arrest.
