Linda Masarira, a Zimbabwean politician and opposition leader, has condemned police brut@lity and called for peaceful conflict resolution following the arrest of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Jameson Timba and 79 other party supporters.
The arrests of CCC members occurred at Jameson Timba’s House in Avondale, Harare, on the 16th of June.
In a recent statement, Masarira expressed her concern, stating that the use of force and the arrest of the youths were unnecessary and excessive.
“As the President of LEAD, I am deeply disturbed by the recent events that transpired at Jameson Timba’s House in Avondale, where over 70 youths were arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) while commemorating the International Day of the African Child.”
“The v!olence that ensued between the youth and police is utterly condemnable and has no place in our society,” Masarira said.
She also urged the ZRP to adopt a more nuanced approach in dealing with peaceful gatherings and to use minimum force only when absolutely necessary.
“I urge the ZRP to adopt a more nuanced approach in dealing with peaceful gatherings and pr0tests, using minimum force only when absolutely necessary. The police should never be seen as enemies of the people; instead, they must work to build trust and ensure public safety.”
“Let us work together to build a nation that values peace, unity, and the well-being of all citizens. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to create a harmonious and prosperous Zimbabwe.”
