Gilbert Shimane Mangole, Botswana’s High Commissioner to India, reportedly revealed that an appeal had been filed in a higher court in Bangladesh against Lesedi Molapisi’s de@th sentence.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi stated that the Botswana government would do everything necessary to appeal the judgment.
Molapisi was detained on January 23, 2022, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with more than 3.145 kg of heroin.
In May, a Bangladeshi court sentenced Molapisi to de@th for coc@ine smuggling.
Botswana immediately launched diplomatic efforts following her fast conviction and execution sentence.
Mangole told national radio station RB1 that “as I speak, having arrived yesterday from Bangladesh, our legal representative has confirmed that he has registered an appeal with a higher court.”
“I didn’t have time to go to court while the appeal was being filed for various reasons, but when he returned from court, he confirmed that he did. “I hope it’s true.”
This decision provides optimism for Molapisi and her family, as Botswana continues to advocate for her release through diplomatic and judicial avenues.
