Despite Kenyan President, William Ruto’s withdrawal of the finance bill, protests continued to rage on in major cities and towns across Kenya, with demands for his resignation now growing louder.
Protesters are calling for Ruto to step down, chanting “Ruto must go!” in the streets.
The demonstrations, which have been characterised by peaceful marches alongside military vehicles, have been fueled by the d3aths of at least 23 protesters and a series of abductions.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission has called for an inquiry into the d3aths, which have sparked widespread outrage and mistrust of the government.
Opposition lawmaker Daniel Manduku has added fuel to the fire, calling for the reconstitution of the electoral commission, Ruto’s resignation, and the dissolution of parliament.
This would pave the way for fresh elections within 90 days. Ruto came to office in 2022 to serve a five-year term, but his opponents say he has lost legitimacy after the violence and repression that has marked his presidency.
The protesters are demanding change and an end to what they see as corruption and authoritarianism under Ruto’s leadership.
