A 42-year-old man from Chief Gambiza area in Gweru has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for r@ping a sleeping woman.
The accused appeared before a magistrate at the Gweru Magistrate’s Court facing rap3 charges.
The accused entered the v!ctim’s bedroom on June 7 2024, at around 11:00 pm while she was asleep n@ked, with her two-year-old baby sleeping next to her.
The accused r@ped the victim, but she soon regained consciousness and saw what was happening.
The accused begged for forgiveness.
When the v!ctim’s husband arrived from work at around midnight they reported the incident to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest and subsequent trial.
In passing sentence, the magistrate considered the severity of the crime, taking into account the fact that the v!ctim was asleep and vulnerable at the time of the @ttack.
The NPA hailed the conviction as a victory for justice and called for stricter punishment for r@pists. “Rap3 is a heinous crime that leaves deep emotional scars on its v!ctims. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book and punished accordingly,”
The sentence sends a strong message that r@pe will not be tolerated in Zimbabwe and that perpetrators will face severe consequences for their actions.
