Controversial British-Zimbabwean preacher Uebert Angel, whose real name is Urbert Mudzanhire, sparked outrage with a recent sermon in which he addressed the role of married women. In the video, Angel emphatically stated that husbands are not friends to their wives but their owners.
During the sermon, Angel declared, “Your husband is not your friend. He is your owner. No, no, you didn’t hear me. You are owned by your husband.” He reinforced his point by quoting a Bible verse, “Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord.” He explained that the term “Lord” translates to “Master,” suggesting that wives are subordinate to their husbands. Angel further stated, “If you don’t want to be owned, don’t get married.”
Angel continued to elaborate on his controversial views, saying, “You are not an equal to your husband. You are not even a friend or partner. You are owned. This is why I say to women, don’t accept when your wife calls you baby.”

The sermon elicited strong reactions online, with many taking to social media to express their opinions:
@IdrisAOni1 commented, “A husband is not an owner to his wife; he is her husband, friend, companion, partner, and assistant. She is his wife, friend, partner, companion, and assistant. Although the husband is a degree above her because he is the head of the family and the financial responsibilities rest on his shoulders, the wife is no less important. If a man treats his wife like some commodity that he owns and can use as he wills, he is a man who belongs to the dark ages.”
@afrisagacity offered a different perspective, “He’s speaking from the ‘Christianity Perspective’… and according to the Bible, he’s very correct. Here’s why…! When you read Ephesians 5, you’d notice that the Bible instructed husbands to ‘love their wives.’ But he instructed wives to ‘submit to their husbands, as unto the Lord.’ That chapter of the Bible was deliberately lettered. It further instructed that wives should submit to their husbands as ‘the church is subject to Christ.'”
@Mr_Gerrie01 strongly disagreed, stating, “Oga, you don’t own your wife. She’s not a goat. She is a human that chose to spend the rest of her life with you. Your duty is to love her and provide for her. You don’t own her. You can’t own a human being.”
Uebert Angel’s sermon has reignited debates about the roles and dynamics within marriage, highlighting the ongoing clash between traditional interpretations of religious texts and modern views on equality and partnership.
“Women need to understand this. Your husband is your Lord and personal saviour, you need him to grow and prosper,” another user tweeted in agreement.
