Zimbabwe is gearing up to launch a nationwide mass dr_g administration (MDA) campaign in September to combat neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as bilharzia, intestinal worms, and lymphatic filariasis.
The campaign is being led by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Higher Life Foundation.
To prepare for the campaign, a training of trainers’ workshop was held in Bulawayo from June 17-19, 2024, which targeted 90 health workers from across the country’s districts.
These trainers will play a crucial role in spreading their knowledge and expertise to their respective districts, ensuring a coordinated approach to disease management and treatment.
The MDA campaign aims to eradicate schistosomiasis (bilharzia), soil transmitted helminths (intestinal worms), and lymphatic filariasis (LF) across the country.
This effort is part of Zimbabwe’s commitment to addressing the significant burden of NTDs, which affect millions of people worldwide.
The campaign is expected to involve the distribution of medication to affected communities, with the goal of reducing the prevalence of these diseases and improving public health outcomes.
The success of this initiative relies on effective planning, coordination, and execution, and it is crucial that health workers are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality services.
