The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics has ignited a controversy following a drag performance that has been labeled “blasphemous” and “hyper-s3xualized” by critics.
Among the most contentious aspects was a scene that reinterpreted the biblical painting, The Last Supper, featuring drag queens, which many social media users have condemned as an “insult to Christians.”
The highly anticipated event kicked off with a dazzling array of performances, showcasing high-profile artists such as Lady Gaga and Aya Nakamur, and commenced with a vibrant parade that included athletes from 206 nations, alongside a delegation of refugees.
The depiction of The Last Supper, performed by drag queens, became a focal point of outrage, as many attendees and online commentators expressed their dismay at what they perceived as a disrespectful portrayal of a religious icon.
“The opening ceremony was filled with transgend*r mockery of the Last Supper, the Golden Calf idol, and even the Pale Horse from the Book of Revelation. The Olympics has made it clear that Christian viewers aren’t welcome.” one X user said .
“This is crazy. Opening your event by replacing Jesus and the disciples with men in drag. There are 2.4 billion Christians on earth, and the Olympics apparently wanted to declare loudly that they are not welcome.” said another user .
The ceremony aimed to celebrate diversity, unity, and the spirit of the Olympic Games. However, portions of the performance quickly received backlash, overshadowing the celebrations .
