University of Zimbabwe graduate Ruth Hwara, who d!ed yesterday after a long battle with kidney disease, will be buried in Wedza tomorrow.
Her d3ath has deeply affected the Zimbabwean community and the diaspora, exacerbated by a scandal over the mishandling of funds meant for her treatment.
Over the past year, a GoFundMe campaign raised substantial money for Ruth’s kidney operation in India. Despite these generous donations, Ruth never received the surgery, as she was not transported to India.
The family shared on Ruth’s Facebook page that they will leave for Wedza today in preparation for her burial tomorrow.

“Mhuri yeZimbabwe tichaita Church service kuNyaradzo, uye tichazosimuka taakuenda kuWedza nhasi. Ruth arikunovigwa kuWedza mangwana.”
In the weeks before her d3ath, Ruth’s condition worsened rapidly.
There is no evidence that the funds were used to improve her care or arrange her travel to India. Instead, the money seems to have disappeared without any accountability from those managing the campaign.
This lack of transparency has incited outrage among donors, many of whom feel deceived.
“We gave money to save a life, and now we are left with nothing but grief and unanswered questions,” one donor lamented.
