A 12-year-old Grade 7 pupil from Nyaradza Primary School has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison for the r@pe of his five-year-old niece, a decision that has drawn significant attention to issues of child safety and legal accountability within families.
The incident occurred on February 12 in Mafa village, Chief Nemangwe, when the young girl was left in the care of her uncle while her grandmother attended a meeting at a nearby crèche.
The court heard that the boy lured the girl to his bedroom, where he instructed her to lie on the bed and remove her inner garment, before @ssaulting her.
Despite the trauma, the girl initially did not disclose the abus3; however, her grandmother later discovered signs of bl3eding while bathing her, prompting a critical inquiry.
Upon learning of the ordeal, the grandmother promptly reported the matter to the authorities, leading to the boy’s arrest.
The court also reviewed medical evidence as part of the case, highlighting the importance of protective measures for vulnerable children.
The Gokwe regional magistrate, Musaiona Shortgame, underscored the severity of the crime and the need for justice, ensuring that the young survivor’s plight was recognized amidst the legal proceedings.
