A politician from Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe, has been elected as the Mayor of Rushmoor Borough Council in the UK.
She is the first woman and first black African to take on this role in Rushmoor.
Councillor Mara Makunura, who grew up in Chinhoyi, will serve as mayor for this year and next year.
Before her mayoral role, Cllr Makunura was the deputy mayor of Rushmoor.
At the council’s annual meeting, she promised to promote diversity and ensure equal opportunities for all.

“Since 52 percent of Rushmoor’s population is female, our leadership should reflect this diversity. I want to inspire young people, especially girls, to pursue their dreams and overcome challenges,” she said.
Cllr Makunura began her education at Chikonohono Primary School and continued at Nemakonde Secondary School in Zimbabwe.
In 1996, she got married and moved to the UK in 1997 to be with her husband.
In 2018, she became the first person of African descent elected as a councillor in Rushmoor, Hampshire, UK.
