A Bulawayo traffic police officer, Memory Sayi, aged 38, is facing charges of criminal abus3 of office after allegedly demanding a US$30 fine without providing a receipt.
Sayi, who pleaded not guilty, has been released on US$100 bail pending further proceedings at the Tredgold Magistrates Court.
The incident occurred on May 20 when Sayi, accompanied by a colleague, detained commuter omnibus driver Donald Muchemi for dropping off passengers at an undesignated stop.
Initially, Sayi claimed Muchemi owed a US$160 fine but reportedly pressured him to pay a bribe of US$30 instead.
Muchemi later reported the incident to the omnibus owner and subsequently filed a police report against Sayi.
In an attempt to cover her tracks after the report was made, Sayi allegedly issued a receipt for the US$30 and forged Muchemi’s signature on it.
