The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has urged residents of Bulawayo’s Nkulumane 10 suburb to contribute funds and purchase stolen cables in order to restore electricity to the area.
The suburb has been without power for over two weeks due to the theft of electricity cables and vandalism of a transformer. Several other areas in Bulawayo have also experienced power cable theft incidents.
Nkulumane resident Qhubani Bhebhe reported that they informed Zesa about the issue but were told to either wait or contribute towards buying replacement cables. However, not all residents were willing to make contributions.
ZETDC Southern Region manager Lloyd Jaji confirmed that residents had been advised to buy power cables and assured them that they would be compensated. Zesa has faced significant losses due to vandalism and theft of infrastructure, costing millions of dollars annually.
