The 2024 edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo has seen a significant increase in participation, with 408 exhibitors registered compared to approximately 270 in the previous year.
This growth is viewed by the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Tongai Mnangagwa, as a positive sign for the recovery of Zimbabwe’s tourism sector following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a recent media briefing, Mnangagwa highlighted that the expo coincides with a global recovery in the tourism industry, indicating a renewed interest in travel and tourism activities.
He expressed optimism that this event would stimulate new investments, foster partnerships, and promote initiatives that would benefit not only Zimbabwe’s tourism industry but also contribute to the regional economy as a whole.
The event has attracted participants from seven countries, including South Africa, Namibia, Malawi, Tanzania, Iran, Angola, and Nigeria, showcasing the expo’s international appeal.
Historically, Zimbabwe’s tourism sector has faced challenges, notably a sharp decline in tourist arrivals during the pandemic, which saw a 40% decrease in the number of visitors from 2020 to 2021, according to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.
The 17th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo aims to highlight Zimbabwe’s unique tourism offerings, rich cultural heritage, and the vast, untapped potential within the sector.
A key feature of this year’s expo is its emphasis on creating business connections, as it will facilitate dedicated business-to-business meetings between international buyers and local suppliers.
These meetings are intended to foster meaningful dialogues regarding potential partnerships, investment opportunities, and the broader development of the tourism landscape.
In summary, the Sanganai/Hlanganani Tourism Expo not only serves as a platform for showcasing Zimbabwe’s tourism sector but also acts as a catalyst for rejuvenating the industry, driving economic growth, and fostering collaborative efforts in tourism development.
