Zimbabwe’s prisons currently house a total of 20,997 inmates, according to the latest data from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat).
Of these prisoners, 23.5% are on remand, meaning they are awaiting trial.
The majority are male, with 20,347 male prisoners making up 96.9% of the population, while only 650 are female.
Among the male prisoners, 15,673 are sentenced, accounting for 77%, while 4,674 are unsentenced, which is 23%.
For the female prisoners, 382 are sentenced (58.8%) and 268 are unsentenced (41.2%).
The total number of inmates has decreased from 24,068 at the end of the first quarter of 2024 to 20,997 by the end of the second quarter.
During this same period, the number of male prisoners fell from 23,401 to 20,347, and the number of female prisoners decreased slightly from 667 to 650.
In total, 16,055 of the inmates are sentenced, and 4,942 are unsentenced.
In the second quarter of 2024, 18,009 prisoners were released, primarily due to reasons like parole, community service, or completing their sentences.
