Temba Mliswa, a former Member of Parliament, has publicly defended the late Zimbabwean music icon Oliver Mtukudzi amid emotional testimonies from Mtukudzi’s children, Selmor and Sandra, who have accused their stepmother, Daisy, of ab_se and claimed neglect from their father.
In response to the social media backlash targeting the legendary musician, who is now unable to defend himself, Mliswa emphasized that such criticism is callous and unwarranted, highlighting his close relationship with Mtukudzi and his efforts to advocate for the musician’s recognition as a National Hero.
He argued that the negative sentiments stem from the natural turmoil children often face when their parents separate and that these emotions should not unfairly vilify Daisy, who was simply part of Mtukudzi’s personal choices.
Mliswa urged that respect for the decisions made by Mtukudzi in his lifetime must be upheld, stressing the importance of stopping the ongoing disputes that only tarnish the musician’s legacy.
He advised Selmor to concentrate on forging her own path in the music industry, rather than leveraging her father’s name for fame, suggesting that she heed his advice about building her own brand rather than relying on their past relationship.
Furthermore, he called into question the nature of her alleged discussions with Mtukudzi, positing that if their conversations were truly substantial, they should have also led to tangible support for her.
As a staunch defender of Mtukudzi’s character, Mliswa hoped to put an end to what he described as exaggerated narratives that detract from the musician’s legacy, insisting that Oliver Mtukudzi’s love for Daisy was genuine and that he left his estate to her.
He concluded his remarks with a poignant call to allow Mtukudzi’s spirit to rest peacefully, arguing that continuing to engage in sensationalized storytelling would not aid anyone involved and would only serve to disrupt the memory of the iconic artist.
