Public Service Minister July Moyo has stated that the government will enhance public workers’ salary in US dollars and provide additional bonuses to its struggling personnel this year.
According to reports, Minister Moyo stated in interviews with state media that suggested pay will prioritise salary changes for lower-income employees following discussions between government and worker representatives.
The minister stated that Treasury has set aside a “significant amount in US dollars to ensure that salary adjustments benefit all civil servants”.
He continued: “However, under the President’s directive, we have prioritised the upliftment of lower-income employees to bridge the wage gap.”
Moyo also stated that bonuses will be awarded to all civil servants this year.
“On the bonus, we will make an announcement after consulting with Treasury, but the bonus will certainly come,” he said.
The minister’s comments come after the central bank recently devalued the ZiG in what officials say was a strategic effort to close the gap between official and parallel market rates.
Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube also stated last week that government employees will soon receive salary increases as part of steps to cushion them from the shocks caused by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s (RBZ) decision to devalue the ZiG by more than 40%.
The Treasury Secretary stated that the government was aware that the induced decrease in the ZiG had an impact on wages, emphasizing the importance of restoring their purchasing power.
