Tragedy struck at the Luili Gold mine in Mumbwa, Zambia, yesterday morning, resulting in the de*ths of 10 miners.
The earth collapsed on the victims while they were conducting mining activities, and five others were rescued alive with inj_ries, currently receiving treatment at Nangoma Mission Hospital.
Unfortunately, more miners are still trapped under the debris, and rescue efforts are ongoing. Central Province Police Commissioner Charity Chanda confirmed that the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Mumbwa General Hospital Mortuary.
The authorities are working to determine the exact number of people who were in the mine at the time of the accident.
This incident is a stark reminder of the risks and dangers faced by miners worldwide. The mining industry has experienced numerous disasters throughout history, resulting in significant loss of life.
Notable examples include the Benxihu coal mine disaster in China, which claimed over 1,500 lives in 1942, and the Monongah Mining disaster in West Virginia, USA, which k!lled 362 miners in 1907.
The cause of the Luili Gold mine collapse is yet to be determined, but it highlights the need for stringent safety measures to protect miners.
The Zambia Police Service is collaborating with relevant authorities to provide assistance to those affected and to prevent similar incidents in the future
